We support the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019.

Women’s Legal Service NSW supports the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019. We urge MPs to pass the Bill without amendment.

We welcome cross-party support of legislation removing abortion from the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) which respects an individual’s right to dignified and safe access to reproductive healthcare.   We commend the work of the 15 co-sponsors of the bill.

We have long advocated that abortion is a healthcare issue. People should not fear being prosecuted and criminalised for seeking the healthcare they need.  The criminalising of abortion has also restricted doctors and health professionals from providing a full range of reproductive health services, making it difficult for women to access the healthcare they need, particularly in regional, rural and remote areas.

NSW is the only state not to have modernised its laws regarding termination of pregnancy.

Open letter to MPs: In support of abortion law reform and a more compassionate healthcare system.

Update: The Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019  (to decriminalise abortion in NSW) is now in the Legislative Council after passing the Assembly last week with some amendments. The Standing Committee on Social Issues will finalise a short and sharp inquiry tomorrow, having received some 13,000 submissions.

Read our submission here. The evidence given by our Principal Solicitor, Janet Loughman to the committee can be found here (from p47-58 (49-59).
